HOME RESILIENCE PROJECTS: Protect Your Home and Family

Aris Papadopoulos, a distinguished expert in resilience (FIU Extreme Events Institute), a construction industry veteran, and a 9/11 World Trade Center survivor is the founder of Resilience Action Fund, a U.S. based nonprofit helping raise awareness and education about building resilience in our homes against natural disasters.  Aris offered guidance on home resilience projects homeowners can complete now, which will better protect their home and family while also increasing the value of their home and saving on insurance policies.

Codes are the Minimum

Building Codes and Home Construction

John: My point is we sometimes put false hope in codes, thinking that they have gone through and thought of everything ahead of time so that we wouldn’t have to. …

Aris: They even say themselves in their fine print this is the minimum.

High Winds can Turn Your Home into a Vacuum

Protect Your Windows: “Today we have things like fabric shutters that are really super strong ballistic nylon, similar to the airbags that I put on a couple of my doors and windows. And they’re so easy to put on and take off, unlike the wooden plywood or the aluminum shutters that a lot of people typically use.” – Aris Papadopoulos

… Tornadoes can happen almost anywhere. And unfortunately, our codes really aren’t meant to preserve our houses. They’re really kind of designed to get us time to escape and not to preserve the most important purchase we have. – Aris Papadopoulos

Most of the roofs today will not withstand an EF 1 tornado. To go to an EF 2-rated roof, change or upgrade your roof to get it rated at least for 135 miles an hour. An organization called FORTIFIED has developed a construction standard backed by decades of research.
